On the basis of the results of original research, various physical aspects of work hardening and fracture of metallic materials at low temperatures (the macroscopic behavior, microstructural processes governing plastic flow and work hardening, the mechanisms of nucleation and propagation of fracture in the final stage of plastic deformation) are analyzed from a unified point of view: the evolution of the microstructural state during plastic deformation of different groups of structural metallic materials in the temperature range 300–4.2 K. The characteristic physical situations realized in low-temperature plastic deformation and fracture of solids are generalized and classified.
