We note here that a significant discrepancy exists between the recently determined dissociation energy of the O2B3Σu state and the energy of the O(1D2)+O(3P2) dissociation limit determined in a spectroscopic cycle. The major contribution to this discrepancy appears to be the currently accepted value for the energy of the O2+b4Σg state relative to the ground electronic state of molecular oxygen.

The O2X3Σg(υ = 0) term energies denned by Refs. 1 and 3 differ by 0.7 cm-1 over the range of rotational levels for which comparison can be made. This factor would reduce the apparent agreement of the two reported values for D(B), which are used here without correction.

The maximum error introduced into D(B) by a lack of specificity in the O2X3Σg fine structure level is +0.8/−1.3 cm−1 for the value measured by Ref. 1 and +0.1/−2.0 cm−1 for the value measured by Ref. 2.
