Anisotropic chromophores (A) oriented in anisotropic media such as liquid crystals or stretched films, or by association with flow oriented biopolymers (e.g., DNA) will, in addition to their intrinsic orientation linear dichroism (LD) exhibit a component of LD characteristic of the dispersive coupling to the electronic states of the orienting agent (B). We may refer to this dispersive component as associate induced linear dichroism (AILD) to distinguish it from the corresponding component for dissociated AB systems (DILD). The form of the AILD component is investigated using perturbation theory, and it is shown to be both strong and long range, falling off with the inverse cube power of the AB separation.
