Experimental results obtained with the Belousov–Zhabotinskii reaction in a continuous stirred reactor are analyzed in order to distinguish between periodic and chaotic behavior. Power spectra and stereoscopic three‐dimensional state space trajectories are presented for both periodic oscillations and for chaos. A next amplitude map is constructed for the chaotic case and from it a Liapunov characteristic exponent of +0.62 is calculated. The rate of divergence of trajectories is illustrated by following the behavior as predicted from the next amplitude map of 10 points initially very close together.
