Detailed studies have been carried out of the temperature dependence of the ultrasonic absorption in the isotropic–nematic phase transition range for p‐methoxybenzylidene p‐n‐butylaniline (MBBA), and mixtures of MBBA with benzene and chlorobenzene. Although there is visual hysteresis in the MBBA systems, the ultrasonic absorption does not depend on whether the systems are cooled or heated. The volume averaged absorption for the MBBA–benzene system in the region of phase separation has a temperature dependence similar to that for MBBA–chlorobenzene, where the phases remain in suspension.
