The classification of rotational energy levels according to symmetry species of the full molecular point group, previously presented only for symmetric‐top molecules, is extended to nonlinear molecules of any symmetry in states of any multiplicity. Selection rules for electric dipole transitions between the rovibronic levels thus classified are presented.

The notation for the double‐valued representations of the point groups has not yet been standardized. In this paper we follow the notation of G. Herzberg, taken from his manuscript for the book Electronic Spectra of Polyatomic Molecules. The labels E32g and G32g used here for double‐valued representations of Oh correlate with the representations E2 and G′, respectively, given by
Jahn
[
