Chemical shifts associated with the species present in some molten and solid thallium salts have been investigated using nuclear magnetic resonance. Shifts between the solid and liquid resonances of three simple ionic thallium salts at their melting points were measured. A correlation with electronegativity is indicated. Resonance absorptions, which corresponded to the thallous and thallic states, were found in the molten complex salts Tl2Cl4 and Tl2Br4. The separation of these absorptions was found to be temperature dependent, and an explanation based on exchange is discussed. One can infer from this that the average lifetimes of the species are about 10‐5 sec at 500°K.
