A search for external vibrations of hydrocarbons physisorbed on Cu(100) has been carried out with high‐resolution inelastic He‐atom scattering. For the saturated hydrocarbons n‐hexane, cyclohexane, n‐octane, and n‐decane, the frustrated translation normal to the surface could be detected with energies of 6.8 meV, 7.3 meV, 7.0 meV, and 7.0 meV, respectively. A very similar value of 7.3 meV for the same vibration is observed for the unsaturated hydrocarbon benzene. No vibrational modes corresponding to frustrated translations parallel to the surface could be detected.

For short-chain n-alkanes adsorbed on graphite an orientation of the molecular C–C–C skeleton plane parallel to the surface has been assumed in neutron scattering work (see Ref. 27 for hexane). This observation seems to be at variance with the STM work of Rabe et al. (Ref. 28), who have found (for long-chain alkanes) an orientation of the C–C–C skeleton plane normal to the surface.

For a precise quantitative determination of CO excitation probabilities, the strong corrugation of the ordered CO overlayer on Cu(100) will lead to corrections which are not relevant for this rough estimate.

With only two peaks, a perfect fit cannot be obtained for all thicknesses since the C1s XPS energies for bilayer and multilayer differ by about 0.3 eV. Since the decomposition procedure is only used to estimate the relative contribution of the monolayer, this small error can be tolerated.
24.
The polarizability of benzene is anisotropic;
see Table I. Since the benzene molecule in the monolayer regime adsorbs with its plane parallel to the surface plane, the polarizability in the molecular plane is more relevant for the van der Waals interaction with the surface than that normal to the molecular plane. In any case, we assume that we can use the isotropic polarizability for this rough comparison.
