A simple one-dimensional micromagnetic model is used to find the nucleation field and the energy barrier for the magnetization reversal at the end of a semi-infinite thin ferromagnetic cylinder. Time dependence of the thermal switching field is calculated. The intrinsic coercivity and thermal stability factor predicted by the model are in a good agreement with recent experiments on CrO2 tapes and on individual Ni long particles.
