On the assumption of an infinite liquid crystal-to-substrate anchoring anisotropy with zero pretilt angle, the threshold voltage in a multidomain twisted nematic liquid crystal display (MTN-LCD), where the number of domains of each pixel is 4, is investigated analytically as a function of the pixel size and cell thickness. It is found that under some critical ratio of the pixel size to the cell thickness the threshold voltage can be strongly modulated by the ratio, i.e., the MTN-LCD exhibits threshold instability.
