Using Brillouin scattering we have measured the pressure dependence of the accoustic velocity and refractive index of fluid hydrogen and deuterium at room temperature in a diamond anvil cell up to solidification at 55 kbars. We find good agreement between our velocities and those calculated from an equation of state given by Liebenberg etal. The refractive indices are fit by a Lorenz‐Lorentz relation yielding a polarizability of 8.17±0.l×10−25 cm.3

At standard conditions nH2 = 1.0001400 at λ0 = 500 nm [Smithsonian Physical Tables (1964) prepared by W. E. Forsythe, Table 554]. The refractive index of D2 is slightly smaller yielding a polarizability 1% less than that of H2 [

D. H. Liebenberg, R. L. Mills, and J. C. Bronson, LA‐6645‐MS and LA–7007–MS reports. The value for γ was extrapolated to 50 kbars from data given in these reports. The variation was small enough so that an average value could be chosen without causing significant error.
