The magnetostriction of single crystals of nickel has been determined within the temperature range 77°K to the Curie point in a magnetic field of 8 kOe. The data were fitted to a five‐constant expression using a least‐squares computer program. The absolute values of the constants decrease monotonically to zero from 77°K to the Curie point, with the exception of A1 which exhibits a broad maximum below 300°K. These constants have been found to be in fair agreement with the Callen‐Callen theory of magnetostriction. It is shown that at low temperatures an expression involving more than five constants is necessary to describe the magnetostriction, although impractical because of the experimental errors.
