We discuss our experience in transforming an object‐oriented Monte Carlo simulation program for the SU(3) gauge theory written in C++ to simulate other statistical mechanics models like the Z(2) gauge theory and the Ising model. We converted the C++ source code to C using a translator and ran the resulting C code on various supercomputers. The resulting code, however, did not run efficiently, and we feel that object‐oriented programming is not, as yet, a serious alternative for computationally intensive problems. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
