Characteristics and capabilities of a measurement interface are proposed. The primary goal is that the interface be able to do virtually all instructional physics experiments while maintaining portability to a variety of host computers and while giving users the ability to develop their own applications. Three specific approaches to implementing the interface are outlined.

Evidence for this can he found from a survey of 900 commercial packages for physics education published
in
Phys. Teach.
25
,
301
(
1987
). Of 93 systems involving data acquisition, only six were judged to be at the university level. Further evidence lies in the fact that of 12 “computers-in-the-lab” papers published in the American Journal of Physics and the Physics Teacher since the beginning of 1986, nine involved locally developed hardware and software.
