The term cyber-physical system (CPS), referring to various critical physical systems that are managed by a particular cyber system, was first introduced in the early 2000s and has attracted the attention of many research disciplines and application areas. Complex network science provides a new perspective for the study of large-scale cyber-physical systems; until recently these complex networked systems were mostly treated as separate networks, without incorporating the complex interactions between them. To fill this gap between theoretical complex network science and the realistic demands of CPS, this Focus Issue aims to capture state-of-the-art theoretical research in modeling and analysis of CPS from a complex network perspective and aims to motivate the need for experts from various scientific disciplines to conduct more research related to CPS.
