AIP Publishing is pleased to announce the launch of a new open access journal, APL Materials. This online-only journal is being launched at an exciting time for materials science and in response to rapid growth in the field. The second open access journal from AIP Publishing, APL Materials, will span the entire breadth of functional materials research covering chemical and biological as well as physics topics, and providing an outlet for research on nanomaterials and nanostructures, electronic, magnetic, and optical materials, organic materials, polymers, biomaterials, energy and environment materials, carbon and amorphous materials, and general functional materials.

The journal is affiliated with, and will build on the history and rich tradition of, Applied Physics Letters with short, letter-style articles and prompt publication. APL Materials offers fast and constructive peer review, enabling the dissemination of cutting-edge science in a timely manner. Its open access format and Creative Commons licensing allow researchers worldwide to read, cite, and build on each other's work immediately upon publication.

The journal's editor, Professor Judith L. MacManus-Driscoll (University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK), leads an interdisciplinary and international editorial team of well-recognized scientists, whose focus is ensuring the high quality of manuscripts accepted for publication in the journal. Under their guidance, we are confident that APL Materials will rapidly become one of the premier publications serving the materials science community.
