Domain switching in a soft lead titanate zirconate ceramics were investigated under orthogonal compression and electric loading. It is found when compression is higher than 200 MPa, both the polarization curve and strain curves indicate domain switching is nearly two-dimensional (2D) within planes perpendicular to the compressive direction. While as the compression reaches 350 MPa and the electric field reverses to negative coercive value, intergranular fracture occurs in the crack-free specimen along the midplane perpendicular to the electric field. This unusual fracture mode is attributed to the internal tensile stress caused by constrained 2D domain switching under orthogonal electromechanical loading.
