Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) photonic waveguiding along laterally wide and thick gold stripes, at , exhibited multimodal behavior with some localizations of the field near the stripe’s edges. This was leveraged in a configuration comprised of two adjacent edges, creating slot waveguide geometry. The measured slot mode was predominantly a TM mode—which corresponds to the coupled fields of the two edges as was also confirmed by numerical simulation.
