The surface structure of plasma-modified self-assembled monolayers is studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The measurements show that the oxygen postplasma gas produces gradual chemical modifications in a pure polyethylene-type monolayer. Different oxygenated functions are observed and quantitatively, they are measured to be denser at shorter distances from the plasma source. Used as liquid crystal alignment layers, these surfaces present a fast transition between the homeotropic and planar anchorings. The average distance between the oxygen atoms on the organic layer is found to be at the anchoring transition.

In this analysis, the surface is supposed to be uniform, since XPS yields results integrated over the concerned volume, thickness times surface.

On noticing that the reactive elements come in contact from the outside, this point is consistent with the observation that the SAMs prepared by a similar method are compact. See, e.g.,

In these places, the orientation of the nematic LC should be distorted, leading to average measurements of the anchoring angle between the two extreme orientations (planar and homeotropic).

We estimate the oxygen density from the amplitudes of the individual fitting lines that we have fitted onto the C peaks (Fig. 1), and on assuming the silane density to be similar to the polyethylene one.

The incertitude in this measurement essentially comes from the error on the SAM density.
