Spectral narrowing has been observed in the emission of a rhodamine-6G-doped layered TiO2/surfactant thin film by both visible and near-ultraviolet laser excitation. Narrowing threshold was extensively decreased by combining waveguide and scatter gain and by exploiting the self-organizing capacity of the surfactant molecules and the unusual optical matching between the TiO2 nanoparticle layer and the organic surfactant layer.
