With the advent of multihundred GeV polarized proton beams the problem of calibrating beam polarization becomes primordial.
Among various possible designs, those based on electromagnetic interactions are revealed quite promising. In particular, polarimeter using the Coulomb diffractive dissociation of proton on heavy nuclei would provide the best solution by reason of the high analyzing power and cross section. A more classical solution based on pp elastic scattering in the Coulomb‐Nuclear interference region is also considered as a dependable method, not only for fixed target experiments, but also for the calibration of accelerating polarized protons.
