We present a method for analyzing spatially resolved fields in multilayer meta‐materials by combining plane‐wave decomposition with multilayer matrix theory and we show that optical effects like sub‐lambda imaging by a planar lens layer are treated accurately for finite diameter beams and can be interpreted by Fourier optical system analysis.
