HAWC will have unprecedented sensitivity for a ground‐based particle detector array. It will be capable of observing the Crab at the 5σ level with each transit while simultaneously observing the entire northern sky with ∼15 times the sensitivity of the Milagro detector. The design and performance of the HAWC water Cherenkov gamma‐ray observatory is presented.
