Analytical modelling of gravitational collapse is an open problem in General Relativity. No satisfactory non‐spherical model is known, and even in spherical symmetry our knowledge is still fragmentary. In the present paper status and perspectives in this field of research are briefly reviewed, putting special emphasis on the companion problem of obtaining exact solutions of the Einstein field equations in matter.
