L‐shell X ray production cross‐sections of rare earth elements have been measured for incident 0.5–3.5 MeV/uma 12C4+ and 16O4+ ions. Results were compared with experimental data from other authors and with theoretical predictions from the pwba, ecpssr, and ecpssr+mi models. The theory ecpssr subestimated cross‐sections when compared with experimental results obtained in the present work, but ecpssr+mi fits well to the experimental data.
