This paper reviews recent results on charm production in hadronic interactions. Charm cross sections inferred from prompt lepton signals are compared with experiments designed to observe specific charm decay modes. All results at FNAL‐SPS energy are consistent with a total cross section for D production of 15–35 mb and with a central production mechanism, as seen in u production.
