The properties of modulated phases appearing in hexanitrocuprates: R2PbCu (NO2) 6 (R stands for K, Rb, Cs and Tl) have been studied with scattering technique. It has been shown that the modulated structure is chAracterized by the Jahn‐Teller active distortion propagating along the [110]‐direction as the TA‐like phonon mode. It is shown that even in the disordered phase, local Jahn‐Teller distortions already exist. The interactions between the local distortions via phonon field seems to substantiate the stabilization of the modulated phase.
