Neutron inelastic scattering has been used extensively as a tool for the investigation of the lattice dynamics of many systems. Such measurements on transition metals and alloys suggest that the frequency vs. wave vector dispersion relations for the normal modes of vibration of these crystals depend strongly on their electronic structures. This paper will review neutron measurements on d‐band and, to a lesser extent, f‐band metals, and point out how various features of the results are related to electronic properties.
