In arid regions, including Uzbekistan, agriculture cannot be carried out without irrigation. Surface and underground water are widely used in traditional irrigation systems. Irrigation canals play an important role in supplying river water to irrigated lands. One of the important tasks is to evaluate the hydrological and hydraulic indicators of these canals based on the data of recent years. In recent years, as a result of climate change, frequent recurrences of low-water years in rivers, a sharp increase in air temperature, and strong winds have been observed. Such natural processes hurt the capacity of irrigation canals. A lot of research has been carried out on more efficient use of water taken from rivers to irrigation canals, increasing the efficiency of the canals, and even now, this type of work is ongoing. One such study was carried out by V.S. Altunin, in which he developed a classification of irrigation canals according to water-carrying capacity. This article is devoted to the study of irrigation canals in Uzbekistan and their geographical description in the example of the Zarafshan basin. In the article, it is noted that the Zarafshan Irrigation Systems Basin Department is responsible for distributing water among consumers through all existing hydro technical facilities and canals in the Zarafshan Oasis. The location of the canals under the jurisdiction of the Irrigation Systems Basin Administration, the source of water intake, water transfer capacity, length, and irrigated areas of the canals have been determined. At the same time, V.S. Altunin’s classification of canals belonging to the Department of Irrigation Systems in the Zarafshan basin was studied. Based on this classification, the classification of canals belonging to the Zarafshan Irrigation Systems Basin Department was developed.
