I explore a classification scheme for carbonaceous chondritic interplanetary dust particles that are mixtures of at least two principal components, viz. granular and polyphase units. The proposed classes are based on the carbon and silicate mineralogy in the principal components. This classification scheme monitors the chaotic non equilibrium conditions that characterize the onset of mineralogical activity in solar system protoplanets. Small‐scale mineralogical, but not chemical, heterogeneity will be the most conspicuous property of CC IDPs. A lack of chemical fractionation but pervasive non equilibrium mineralogy will be diagnostic for the least altered solar system materials.
