This study aims to determine the analysis of students’ initial needs regarding learning innovations that can be used to empower critical thinking skills in Animalia material in biology subjects. This research is qualitative research which is the initial stage of development research using the ADDIE model. The research focuses on the analysis stage. The research subjects were 72 students in one of the senior high schools in Central Java Province with a major in Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The data used in this study are preliminary research articles and questionnaires to analyze the initial needs of students as many as 72 studens. The survey data were then organized using coding. The coding results were analyzed descriptively. The results show that learning innovations are needed during the Covid-19 pandemic that can be used to empower students’ critical thinking skills. Learning innovation in the form of e-module development based on Smart Apps Creator (SAC) on animalia material.
