The presence of an independent curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka in Bahasa) encourages teachers to be more flexible in developing instruction, focusing on numeracy, and using digitalization to explore local contexts. For this reason, this study presents a section of research that aims to produce valid, practical PISA-like digital mathematics problems and potentially improve students’ numeracy skills. Design research with development study is the main framework of this research, consisting of preliminary and formative evaluation/prototyping stages. However, this research only focuses on the preliminary stage. The qualitative data were collected and analyzed through a documentation study of the independent curriculum, the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 framework, printed or online PISA items, and instructional videos containing developed PISA-like mathematics problems. The result of this research is the initial prototype of PISA-like digital mathematics problems that strengthen students’ numeracy skills with PISA criteria covering content, context, and mathematical processes. This research contributes to a better understanding of the procedures involved in the digitization of PISA-like mathematics problems both in learning and assessment.
