This article analyzes the economic, social and environmental benefits and drawbacks associated with tourism growth, as well as the need for a better understanding of the implications for policy makers and industry for destinations seeking to develop tourism more sustainably. The analysis shows that the growth of tourism in many countries, regions and destinations is often unbalanced on all three fronts due to the rapid and uncontrolled growth of the number of visitors. However, there is no universal solution to this problem, as the opportunities and challenges presented by tourism development vary depending on the specific characteristics of each destination. A number of strategic aspects are highlighted in order to balance the positive and negative aspects of tourism activation to traditional and new destinations and to achieve a sustainable vision for the future;
