Problem solving is a method or heuristic steps that are used to monitor and evaluate the processes and results of thinking that occur, usually called metacognition. The purpose of this study was to explore the level of metacognition of junior high school students based on solving mathematical problems, and to find the best strategy for developing metacognition of junior high school students in solving mathematical problems. The research subjects were junior high school students in Kendari City. Indicators for tracking students’ metacognitive levels, following Lauren’s adaptation, are tacit use, conscious use, strategic use, and reflective use. The data analysis technique of this research is descriptive analysis and interview techniques. Based on the results of the study it was concluded that the metacognition level of Kendari City Middle School students in solving math questions for HOTS questions at the Reflective use level was still low (19.91%) compared to the Tacit use level (38.05%). Meanwhile, the LOTS questions at the Reflective use level were already high (30.97%) but did not exceed the Tacit use level (33.19%).
