The study of the energy impact on the economic and social sphere under the modern conditions is highly relevant. In this paper, two different approaches are used to answer the question of the energy impact on economic development and the status of the social sector. The first approach is based on the bibliometric analysis, which allows determining the current areas of studying the role of energy in the economy and the place of these studies in science. The information base for the analysis is a thematic selection of Scopus publications. The second approach is based on the economic and mathematical analysis of statistical information from open sources to determine the impact of energy consumption and the energy intensity of GDP on a number of economic and social development indicators.
