The Thermionic System Evaluation Test (TSET) facility in Albuquerque is currently testing Russian TOPAZ‐II space power systems. Considerable technology has transferred to US scientists during non‐nuclear testing of the V‐71 and Ya‐21 thermionic space power systems. This is due in part by the fact that US personnel are performing all of the actions associated with the startup, steady‐state operations, and shutdown of the Russian systems. This paper will discuss the history, philosophy, and process for training and certifying US personnel to operate and maintain Russian built space power systems in less than six months.
