Drought stress during the generative stage poses a significant loss to agricultural production around the world and thus poses a serious threat to the sustainable agriculture of rice (Oryza sativa L.). A proper selection approach will help to obtain the expected superior genotype. This study aims to select eight rice genotypes that are drought tolerant during the generative stage using a multivariate analysis and preference selection index. The research was conducted from January to April 2019 at the Isotope and Radiation Application Center, National Nuclear Energy Agency of Indonesia. The screening experiment was planned under a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with two factors and three replications. Six of the thirteen observed characters were selected (i.e. plant height, panicle length, number of leaves, root length, leaf width, and number of panicles) with a cumulative value of 66.73%, according to factor analysis based on principal components analysis, could be used as selection criteria for drought tolerance during the generative stage. Towuti (index value 0.951) and Limboto (index value 0.925) genotypes displayed a potential to be tolerant to drought stress during the generative stage according to preference selection index analysis.
