In the present study, the effects of pressure, pressing time, grinding time, drying temperatures, shell removal of hydraulic pressing as the oil extraction method for Plukenetia volubilis L. seeds cultivated in Vietnam were investigated. Sacha inchi seeds were collected from Dak Nong province, Vietnam and oil extraction was performed by using hydraulic pressing method with various operating parameters. The resulted oil was analyzed for oil yield, physiochemical properties and chemical composition using standard methods and GC-FID assays, respectively. It was found that the conditions of non-drying temperature, grinding in 180 seconds of Sacha inchi seeds being pressed at 190 kg/cm2 in 15 min for each turn have produced the highest oil yield of 234.86 mL/kg whole dry seeds. The extracted oil showed acid value of 1.909±0.0257 mgKOH.g−1oil, peroxide value of 1.907±0.0082 meqO2.kg−1oil, iodine value of 104.05±0.91 gI2.100g−1 and saponification value of 193.373±2.671 mgKOH.g−1oil, all of which were within the standard range. Results from gas chromatography– flame ionization (GC–FID) have shown that the P. volubilis oil contained a high level of linolenic (48.27-49.83%) and linoleic acids (35.49-36%). Findings from the present study can be considered as a preliminary investigation of applying hydraulic pressing for cost-effective and simple oil extraction method for P. volubilis seed in Vietnam.
