This study aims to produce HLT which can help students to apply the concept of rectangle area in daily life. The context used is sewing patchwork into a tablecloth. This study used design research type validation studies. The stages carried out are preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. However, this article only discusses the initial design, namely at the preliminary design stage. Data were collected by documentation and analyzed descriptively. This study resulted in an HLT consisting of four activities, namely sewing square pacthwork into a rectangular tablecloth, modeling a rectangular tablecloth, counting the number of squares by grouping, and finding the concept of a rectangular area.
