In the wake of recent developments, technology has played an imperative role in transforming the Indian economy. However, rural India is still facing severe technology deficits as it is already struggling to fulfill the basic infrastructural necessities such as provision of power, water, resilient healthcare facilities, roads, education system etc. To cover up these gaps, government of India is actively taking initiatives to bring sophisticated technology for rural development. Agricultural activities have always been the center of rural development in pre-independent era for Indian economy, but in the modern times there has been a paradigm shift towards the industrial sector development at rural level. Therefore, a comprehensive approach has been adopted by government of India targeting at overall development of rural sector by bringing technological revolutions in the areas of education, health care, agriculture, village, and cottage industries etc., all operating at local level. The technological transformations are not only restricted to urban areas, they have gained momentum in rural sector development as well. This is evident from use of HYV (High Yielding Varieties) seeds in agricultural activities, introduction to the concept of organic farming, digitalization of education in primary and secondary schools in rural areas, sophisticated technologies encouraging digital financial transactions, technological skill development for artisans, traders etc., for enhancing productivity of village and cottage industries, technological upgradation for establishing strong infrastructure at rural level etc. This chapter aims to highlight the enabling trends and challenges in providing technology education for rural development in India. The purpose of this chapter is to understand the various government initiatives and schemes concentrating on bringing the technological advancements in all spheres of rural India.
