Winter turnip rape (Brassica rapa var. oleifera bienis) is oil and forage crop which has a wide area of cultivation. It can be produced in regions with a severe climate or on the soils where other oil crops can’t be cultivated. Breeding work with winter turnip rape in V.S. Pustovoit All-Russian Research Institute of Oil Crops (VNIIMK) was started in 1981. The first Russian, erucic acid free, variety of winter turnip rape with grey-blue seeds VNIIMK 213 was developed by intraspecific crosses of a highly erucic winter-resistant sample No 4516 and an erucic acid free variety of spring turnip rape of Canadian breeding Torch in 1990. At the same time, development of parent material for breeding of yellow seeded varieties was begun. As a result of the many-year work, basing on an intraspecific hybrid of VIR’s sample of winter turnip rape k-3025 and the spring turnip rape variety Candle, there were developed: the first yellowed-seeded variety of winter turnip rape Zlata in 2000, the variety Lyubava in 2006, the variety Gordeya in 2018. Breeding of turnip rape in VNIIMK is aimed on development of highly productive, winter-resistant, yellow-seeded varieties of “000” type. The result of breeding works for 2016–2021 is development of four breeding numbers exceeding the standard variety Gordeya by seed yield 0.26–0.40 t/ha, with low glucosinolate content – 11.6–12.4 µmol/g, with fatty-acid composition of oil which fits the requirements to salad oils of high quality.
