Graphene oxide (GO) is synthesized from graphite fine powder using the Improved Hummers method. The structural, microstructural, and functional groups are characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopy. The interplanar spacing obtained from XRD is 9.1 Å for (100) plane, confirming graphene oxide formation. Raman spectroscopy is utilized to observe the characteristic modes and obtain the crystallite size for graphene-related materials. The Raman spectrum includes broad first and second-order vibrational bands of Graphene oxide. The deconvoluted peak positions are acceptable quantitated bands of the graphene oxide. The calculated crystallite size, La from the Raman spectrum, is 14.7 nm.
