World Health Organization (WHO) data shows that Indonesia ranks 5th in the world in premature babies. Portable Grashof incubator completely built-up (CBU) type has been developed since 2012 to help premature babies from the underprivileged group as a community engagement from the Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia. Even though the dimensions are small (65x45x42 cm) compared to the typical baby incubator in general, delivery to a remote island of the Grashof incubator has become a problem in Indonesia. Some damage when the incubator arrives at the destination due to fragile materials and careless behaviour of the shipping service. Health care facilities in remote areas are inferior to support the health of premature babies. Therefore, the Grashof incubator completely knock-down (CKD) type is made to be sent to remote locations safely. By evaluating volumetric limits, estimated shipping costs, and discussing the problem with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to modify the design, we made the Grashof incubator CKD type was made as simple as possible to be safe in shipping and easily assembled. Until May 2021, there have been more than 250 Grashof portable incubators, and 160 of them are CKD types. Since 2012 Grashof incubators have been spreading across 120 locations in Indonesia and have helped around 4100 babies. The small dimensions of the CKD type reduce the risk of damage because it is more compact to be sent to remote areas so that premature babies obtain proper help in their efforts towards average weight.
