The various factors that affect the open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of a two‐terminal GaInP2/GaAs tandem cell are examined. These include a) an anomalous problem associated with the GaAs bottom cell and b) back surface passivation of the thin GaInP2 top cell. Solutions to these problems are presented and yield tandem Vocs close to the practical theoretical limits.
