This study aims to observe the ability of KOH activated candlenut shells charcoal to adsorb undesirable compounds in biogas. The activation process is carried out chemically and followed by a physics process where the charcoal is heated at a temperature of 300 °C for 3 hours. Data collection was carried out on a laboratory scale for the 3 main compounds within biogas, namely CH4, CO2, and H2S. The work results found that the activated charcoal (AC) of candlenut shells was able to adsorb undesirable compounds and thereby increase the CH4 content. The best results obtained were activated charcoal activation using 10% KOH. However, increasing the concentration of the alkaline solution will cause damage to the pore structure of the charcoal, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the adsorption process. The adsorption effectiveness decreases with time. However this research has paved the way for the importance of candlenut shell activation to improve biogas quality. The improvement of the ability of 10% KOH activated charcoal is based on the enlargement of the charcoal pores which allows the accumulation of CO2 and H2S.
