This study aims to determine students' strategic competence and productive disposition in solving problems in terms of field independent (FI) and field-dependent (FD) cognitive styles. Strategic competence and productive disposition support each other to solve problems in everyday life. These abilities are expected to be possessed by students in learning mathematics. Cognitive style is a person's way of processing information. Differences in cognitive style will affect a person's wayof solving problems. This research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this study were students of SMA Negeri 4 Kendari grade 10. Data was collected through tests, questionnaires, and interviews. Based on the data analysis, the results showed differences in strategic competence between FI and FD subjects. FI read and imagined to formulate problems while FD read, imagined, and drew, then FI represented the problem completely while FD was incomplete; FI solved the problem correctly while the subject of FD could not solve the problem properly. FI and FD have different productive disposition abilities. FI always gives logical reasons while FD subjects often. FI never feels anxious about learning mathematics while FD subjects sometimes. FI is always diligent, while FD subjects are sometimes diligent in studying In mathematics. FI always believes in their ability to solve problems, while FD sometimes believes. FI always believes that mathematics is useful in everyday life, while FD only sometimes believes that.
