A structure undergoes many complicacies starting from the selection of a site to the maintenance. Multiple factors like improper design, usage of construction materials of poor quality, mistakes made during the construction process and the environmental factors are responsible for those complications. Among these, environmental factors are not considered to be important in many places, but play a key role in affecting the quality of the structure. The distresses caused by the environment can be witnessed as several structural and non-structural defects viz., efflorescence, corrosion, cracking, spalling, etc., Hence, protection and maintenance against environmental distress are necessary as this may cause both short- and long-term effects. It is also vitally important to prolong a structure’s useful life. Solutions for the problems caused by the environment were provided by many researchers. Thus, this paper’s intention is to keenly study the protection measures taken against environmental factors like wind, air, moisture, temperature, etc., to various structures given by many researchers. From the study, it turned out that although environmental factors wreak havoc on structures, using appropriate building materials and control measures can help to alleviate the problems.
