A series of ceramic pigments in the system CaO.NiO.MgO.2SiO2 was synthesized via solid-state high temperature sintering at 1000, 1100 and 1200°C. The resulting ceramic pigments were examined by powder X-ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopy, FT-infrared spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. It was found that under the synthesis conditions a multiphase ceramic is obtained which contains diopside, wollastonite, åckermanite, crystobalite (and nickel, magnesium oxides) in various proportions. The synthesized ceramic pigments are pale green in colour, depending on the content of Ni additive and phase composition.
