The article examines information needs in the information realm. Information needs exist in living information and technical systems. Man is the subject of the information realm and has information needs. This determines the relevance of the study. The article describes various types of non-information and information needs. The presence of increasing needs law in the information realm is shown. It is proved that the need motivates activity and serves as the basis for systems’ development. The relationship between resources and the ability to meet needs is shown. The conditions for satisfying the needs and information needs have been determined. The presence of need universal functions is described: signal, motivational, realization, evaluative. The content of these functions is revealed. Three types of information needs are described. The article defines the concept of "information need". The article reveals the content of the notion “need for information resources”.
