The results of studies of structural parameters and mechanical properties of materials of single layers of multilayer wear-resistant coatings are presented. It is shown that the presence of alloying elements in the coating increases the microhardness, the modulus of elasticity, the critical stress intensity coefficient and complex indicators of resistance to abrasive wear and plastic deformation. The influence of the coating material on the functional characteristics of the blade processing process during drilling: axial force and torque is studied. The reduction of the torque and axial force on the cutting edges of the drill when applying coatings is shown. At the same time, the greatest decrease is due to the use of coatings of a complex composition. Based on the conducted research, the architecture of multilayer coatings is proposed. Studies of the operability of drills with the developed coatings have shown their effectiveness. The durability period of drills with a multilayer coating increased by 1.7…2.5 times, depending on the cutting modes.
